Let's Band Together: The Great Minnesota Community Band Festival

Medalist Concert Band is excited to perform in this year's Let's Band Together: The Great Minnesota Community Band Festival. The Minnesota Symphonic Winds hosts the Festival each year. Other participants include the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra and the Seward Concert Band. The purpose of the Festival is to celebrate and share the unique power of adult music-making in community wind ensembles as well as support historically underrepresented composers. This year's artist-in-residence is Shruthi Rajasekar, a talented Indian American composer known for creating music that highlights themes of identity, community, and joy.
Artist-in-residence Shruthi Rajaseka will give a Composer's Talk in the Auditorium Commons at 1:30 p.m. The Festival Concert begins at 3:00 p.m. with each group performing for approximately 20 minutes. There will be a reception in the Auditorium Commons following the concert.
2026-2027 Bloomington Center for the Arts Performance Series
Medalist Concert Band is excited to announce the dates of our upcoming Bloomington Center for the Arts Performance Series (BCAPS). Links to the first two concerts are included within each concert description. Tickets for the concerts in 2027 will be available soon. However, tickets for those concerts are available now with the purchase of a Season Pass. A Season Pass must be purchased BEFORE our November 8, 2026, concert.

America 250: Let Freedom Ring!
The story of America can be heard through its music. As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, Medalist Concert Band explores that story through classic patriotic works and inspiring compositions by today's leading composers. From the timeless music of Sousa and Copland to the expressive voices of Frank Ticheli, Kimberly Archer, Julie Giroux, and Omar Thomas, Let Freedom Ring! showcases the rich tradition and continuing evolution of American concert band music. A highlight of the afternoon is Aaron Copland's iconic Lincoln Portrait, featuring special guest narrator Bob Shomper, a veteran broadcaster and the "Golden Voice" of the University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band.

Whether you're continuing a favorite holiday tradition or joining us for the first time, you'll enjoy an afternoon of familiar favorites and musical surprises that celebrate the spirit of the season. Make this festive concert part of your holiday celebration.

¡Ritmo! Celebrating the Music of Latin America
Join us as the Medalist Concert Band celebrates the rich and varied musical traditions of Latin America. This concert features the Minnesota premiere of Arturo Márquez’s Sinfonia Nómada (Nomadic Symphony), a major new work for wind ensemble commissioned through an international consortium in which Medalist was invited to participate. Marquez, one of Mexico's most celebrated living composers, is known for bringing the rhythms and musical traditions of Mexico into the concert hall. Our program also features Mexican composer Nubia Jaime-Donjuan, who studied composition with Márquez and later became the first woman to win Mexico’s Arturo Márquez Composition Competition. Medalist oboist Karyl Rice is the featured soloist in Jaime-Donjuan’s Salsa del Alma: Concertino for Oboe and Concert Band.

Once Upon a Time
Stories and imagination come to life in this family-friendly concert that explores how music can tell a story, without saying a word. At the heart of our program is Julie Giroux’s Symphony No. 2: A Symphony of Fables, a musical journey inspired by familiar fables, like The Tortoise and the Hare and The Ugly Duckling. The storytelling continues with Eric Whitacre’s Ghost Train; John Philip Sousa’s playful Mother Goose March; and Jack Stamp’s Bloomington Breakdown, which Stamp was inspired to write for Medalist after recently guest conducting the band. This concert also showcases the winner of Medalist’s Earl C. Benson Concerto Competition, giving an outstanding young Minnesota musician the opportunity to perform as soloist with the band.
